The University of Maryland has named as its new dean of university libraries, Patricia A. Steele - a national leader in the Google Project and other efforts to digitize collections creating wider access to universities' information resources.
University of Maryland graduate Jeanette J. Epps has been selected for NASA’s 2009 astronaut candidate class. Epps, an intelligence officer with the Central Intelligence Agency, received a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the A. James Clark School of Engineering in 2000. She was chosen from more than 3,500 applications and will begin training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Houston, in August.
The University of Maryland and the City of College Park continue their tradition of jointly hosting a Fourth of July celebration for area residents. Fireworks start at dusk - about 9 p.m. You can expect a 30 to 40 minute program. In case of rain, the fireworks show will be held on Sunday, July 5.
A student employed by the University’s Stamp Center was recently confirmed to have an incidence of the H1N1 virus (swine flu). The student was diagnosed and treated by a private physician yesterday. Any possibility of contracting the virus has passed since the student is not at work and is home recovering.
